I mean, I have never seen black scars before. They are usually a lighter colour of the person'e skin. Like the one over on TKB's face.

My opinion is that they carved out his back and dyed it with some sort of ink...like a very primitive form of tattooing. Because that is how the do tattoos as well, no? They puncture the skin and put ink underneath.
And if the simply branded it, like with a hot blade, it would still not be black - just scar tissue.

So all in all a very painful and primitive way of getting a tattoo.

Skin removal/skinning
Cutting in single lines produces relatively thin scars, and skin removal is a way to get a larger area of scar tissue. The outlines of the area of skin to be removed will be cut, and then the skin to be removed will be peeled away. Scars from this method often have an inconsistent texture.

Malik's scar is more detailed that TKB's.
Fact remains, it was a carving. Tattoos don't take very long to heal.

For the horrific process it took to make that winged pattern, it looks pretty good, I must admit.. I would never want to get it done, myself, but I can, y'know, appreciate the artwork? I can only imagine how badly that must hurt without any sort of anesthesia...
