^ THIS. Probably why I've never, ever liked genderbending as a practice. There are some very cute, very sweet results, but most of it is just pin-ups. :(

I don't think you should necessarily call it "sexism", if that's the case than just any attraction to the female form could be considered sexist. It's the internet, of course there'll be some pervs who draw unrealistic, obnoxious, slutty pictures, but I'd be more keen to write it off as 'horny bastards' than 'sexism'.
Plus, some of those artists who do the ridiculous art are female. /shrug |

I see your point.
1. I was on my "being a feminist" trip. 2. I would say that also girls can think in sexist terms, but more subconsciously. It depends on your social and cultural backround. If a woman grows up in a very conservative society and therefore constrained into a given (mostly from men) role model, it would feel natural for her to be devoted. One of the reasons for that uke/seme shit. 3. And I agree that this bunny pictures are more for "horny bastards", but nevertheless you can see there a hidden sexism. |

Sexism is not a male only phenomenon - both men and women are heavy conditioned, both implicitly and explicitly, by society to adhere to heteronormative masculine patterns and ideals, and the fact that most male-to-female genderbends are automatically drawn in skimpy, slutty outfits, with huge breasts and hips, and in pin-up situations or generally being pretty much molested by male characters, is a pretty tell-tale sign of how much we automatically objectify the female form. Just because nobody likes to think they are being sexist, doesn't mean they aren't being sexist in some shape or form.
Buuut I don't want to go off on a tangent here. |

Ha, really? I guess we know how to solve the problem of all the arguing that's been goin' on around here lately:
Suddenly - BREASTS. I really don't have much to add here, though, since this isn't one of the things I feel strongly about, like gendered language or the stuff that was being discussed on the fanfic thread last night. On the one hand, women shouldn't be seen as sexual objects; on the other, if women want to look provocative, they should be allowed to take control of their bodies and be sexy if they want to be. Either way, the female Kaiba at the top of the page is not appealing to me in the least. This one, on the other hand... |

I don't mind these if they are drawn well and if they don't have that certain "come hither / am I making you hot baby / porn start gasp / pained / uncomfortable / unwilling / embarrassed / etc." look on their faces. That is another pet peeve of mine - I just don't find those faces attractive or nice to look at. Buuut what am I doing ranting so much all of the sudden? Hmm.

I know what you mean. I think nudity can be tastefully done as long as the character retains their personality.

Yes, that Kaiba bunny girl is obviously meant to be provacative, there's no doubt about it, and I'm sure, yeah, there are some male (fan)artists that view boobs and skimpy outfits as a cheap thrill, I just mean I don't necessarilly think that just because a drawing is made by a male of a female looking "sexy" it's automatically sexist. Is a woman drawing a man in a compromising position/attire sexist?
I just think some of the more provacative pictures are something like.. Expressions of sexuality or what the artist finds appealing, I guess? And I don't view that as being automatically sexist, whether it be guys drawing girls or vice versa. Can it be? Sure. But I wouldn't say it always is. |

@Anreyla:
Alright. I don't completely disagree with you, I just want to bring up two points. First, when men are depicted as "sexy" they are usually also depicted as strong, capable, and often a bit cocky (in the sense of "confident"). When women are depicted as "sexy," they are usually also depicted as weak, helpless, or resisting. This isn't universal, and individual pictures really aren't much of a problem - after all, I'm sure plenty of people out there, both male and female, have fantasies about a helpless lover - but it's still a troubling tendency, and it means that it's not always easy to compare erotic drawings of men with those of women. Second, the problem isn't with the provactiveness or over-sexualization. Sex is all well and good. The problem is with the degree to which the subject of the art is objectified. I, personally, am not much of a fan of super-big boobs, but I understand that other people are, and they have a right to enjoy them. It only becomes an issue when a woman is reduced to nothing more than her super-big boobs. It's hard to tell in real-life porn where this line is, but I think it's easier in fan-creations. Taking the picture of bunny-Kaiba at the top of the page as an example: that's not Kaiba. That bunny girl is pretty obviously not meant to be anything but her (extremely unrealistic) body, and this sort of objectification isn't healthy for either men or women in real life. All that being said, I don't disagree with you completely. Artists do have the right to draw what they find appealing. And this is Yu-Gi-Oh genderbending, so, y'know, having high expectations about this sort of thing probably means that you'd be in for a disappointment. Really, my biggest problem with the Kaiba-bunny was just that I didn't find it attractive - which is a personal problem. I think I talk too much. |

I bet Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds would still have done well if Yusei was female. I mean, seriously: a hot, stoic, badass woman riding around on a motorcycle? 5Ds seems to have been intended for a slightly older audience anyway; guys would have eaten that right up.
...or maybe I'm just betraying how completely sexy I find fem!Yusei. Look at her with that wrench. |
